How Far You Can Realistically Work Without a Car

Turning your transport situation into a shape, not a distance

Open a map and put a pin on your front door. Then resist the thing everyone does next, which is drawing a circle.

Instead, list the ways out. The streets you would walk and how far along each. The stops within walking distance of the door and which services call at them. Anyone who could give you a lift and where they are going anyway. Then trace each route outward and mark the last point where you would still get off, work, and be able to get back.

Join those marks. The shape you get is your working area, and it looks nothing like a circle.

Do it once, with the timetable open, and save it. A screenshot or a marked paper map is enough. After that it is a lookup rather than a calculation, which matters because the calculation is what you skip when you are tired and somebody is offering you work.

The version of this exercise built purely around the timetable is planning a working day around the last service, and the two feed each other.

Why the shape is lopsided and follows lines

Transport runs along corridors, so reach runs along corridors. What you end up with looks like a starfish: long arms down the routes, deep dents everywhere between them.

The counterintuitive result is that somewhere far away down a good line is closer, in every sense that matters, than somewhere nearby that has no way through. A house two streets over on the far side of a dual carriageway with no crossing can take longer to reach than a place several stops out.

So mark the barriers, because barriers are the edges you forget. Rivers with few bridges. Rail lines. Motorways. Industrial estates with no sidewalk. A hill that is nothing in a car and a different proposition on foot at the end of a shift. Retail parks whose only entrance faces the parking lot.

Walk one or two of these before you trust them. A map shows a road connecting two points. It does not show that the road has no footway for the last stretch, and finding that out at dusk on the way to a first shift is a bad way to learn it.

The return journey sets the real edge

The outbound trip happens at a time you choose. The return happens at a time chosen for you, and that is the one that decides the boundary.

For each arm of your shape, write down the last service that gets you home from it. Then write the time you would have to leave the job to reach that departure, including the walk to the stop. That is your hard finish time for that arm.

Then ask the question that catches people. If the job overruns, what happens? Some overruns cost nothing because another service follows. Some cost you the evening. An arm where a small delay turns into a long walk home is shorter than it looks on the map, so draw it shorter.

Check the outbound too, because a job you cannot reach on time is as useless as one you cannot leave. But the return leg is the one that gets skipped in planning, and it is the one that strands people.

Where a paid ride can rescue a bad return, that is a real option with a real price, and when paying for a ride to a gig beats owning a car is the comparison to run before you rely on it.

Why the shape shrinks after dark and at weekends

You do not have one boundary, you have three, and drawing only the daytime one is how people get caught.

Evening services thin out and some stop entirely, so arms shorten. Sunday is its own map, and on some routes it barely exists. Public buildings you counted on for shelter or a toilet or a socket close.

The walk changes too. The stretch between the stop and the address is a different thing at eleven at night than at eleven in the morning: unlit paths, an underpass, a park that is a shortcut in daylight and a bad idea later. If you would not want a family member walking it, do not put it inside your boundary because you personally can tolerate it.

Draw the evening shape and the Sunday shape on the same map in different colors. They will be visibly smaller, and seeing that is the point. It converts a vague uneasiness into a line you can point at when somebody offers you a late shift.

Using the boundary as a filter before you apply

Before an application, before an interview, before you accept a booking, plot the address against the shape for the hours the work actually needs.

Three outcomes. Inside the daytime shape and inside the evening shape: fine. Inside the daytime shape but outside the evening one, with a shift that finishes late: not fine unless you can pay for a ride every time, priced in from the start rather than discovered later. Outside the shape: do not apply, however good it looks.

That last one is the discipline that saves you. The cost of applying anyway is not the wasted evening. It is getting hired, doing one shift, discovering the return does not work, and leaving, which costs you a reference.

The filter also works forwards. Knowing the shape lets you go looking inside it deliberately, which is the idea behind finding your first customer in your own neighborhood. A bicycle redraws the shape entirely, and what changes when you deliver by bike is mostly a story about the dents between the arms filling in.

A map problem that motivation cannot solve

Draw it honestly and you may find your boundary contains houses and very little else. No employers, few shops, no venues, nothing that generates the kind of work you were looking for.

That is a fact about where you live and what runs there. More applications will not change it, and neither will getting up earlier. Naming it correctly points you at responses that can work instead of ones that cannot.

There are two. Sell something that does not require a body to travel, so the work arrives instead of you. Or work the density you do have by turning scattered nearby customers into a repeating on-foot round where the same doors expect you on the same day. A small area with regular customers can hold a working week. A small area with no regulars cannot.

If neither is possible, the constraint is the location, and the next move is a housing or transport decision rather than a work one. Do not spend a season treating a map problem as a motivation problem.
